Time for a New Captain?

Thiago Silva is gone, Reece James is back, and Conor Gallagher has been incredibly consistent throughout the season, but there have been talks about Gallagher being for sale; so, everyone is wondering who will be selected for the role of captain in the upcoming season.    

Reece James

The problem with Reece James is his inability to stay fit. He was out of commission for the majority of the 23/24 season. His quality was evident as soon as he stepped onto the pitch, but how long will that be? Losing the captain is a huge blow to the team morale, so they need a captain that can be a solid pillar all season. James also has a temper that was seen when he was suspended from the Brighton game. Now he will be missing the first three games of the next season. 

Conor Gallagher

No other player bleeds blue like Conor Gallagher does. We have all been impressed with his performance and fighting spirit in the middle of the pitch. He has been a solid defensive and attacking force. After losing Enzo Fernandez, he proved to be a better partner to Caicedo in the central defensive position. He is young and scrappy, and he also may be transferred in the summer. Although fans are keen on keeping him, club financials may force the sale of Gallagher and fellow academy graduate, Trevor Challobah. 

Ben Chilwell

We have seen Ben Chilwell wear the band in previous seasons, but he has had the same problems with injuries as James and is also inconsistent as a full back. A captain needs to be an example to other players on the pitch, which means they need to be playing at the highest quality. Since returning from injury, Chilwell has not recovered the form he once had. Some fans are calling for his transfer this summer for a stronger left back option. 

Another Option 

The squad is very young and many of the players are new to the club. The answer is not as obvious as we would hope. Raheem Sterling has the wisdom and experience, but his form has been inconsistent. Christopher Nkunku would be a strong candidate if he were fit and playing consistently. The only solid option given the current form and overall performance would be Cole Palmer. He is young but intelligent on the pitch. He passes the ball around with class and is always one of the most consistent performers in every match. I'd prefer a more seasoned captain, but that is the squad we have to work with until after the summer transfer window. If we don't have an obvious candidate for captaincy, maybe Chelsea needs to buy one.

Enzo's Racist Chant Has Team Divided

 Enzo Fernandez Racist Chant Has Team Divided      Enzo Fernandez came under fire after a video surfaced of the Argentinian National team chanting racist remarks. Argentina was awarded the Copa America 2024 after defeating Colombia 1-0 on a day shrouded by controversy. The game was delayed over an hour after fans created chaos by storming the gates. Hundreds of fans climbed the gates and entered the stadium without tickets, leaving those with tickets outside while security attempted to restore order. The game ended with an Argentine victory, but the players are facing the aftershock of their celebration song.  Fernandez, midfielder for Chelsea, posted a video on Instagram of the team chanting about the French National team. They are singing about the players being from Africa but documented as French. It targets Mbappe directly, whose father is from Cameroon, and his mother is from Algeria.  Chelsea Legend Unhappy with Manager Firing       The decision to release Mauricio Pochettino has been a shock to many of the players and coaching staff. One Chelsea legend and current academy coach took to Instagram to express his feelings about the departure. John Terry, longtime defender and team captain during their most successful era, wrote that he is "gutted" by Poch's exit. Chelsea fans share in his hope that players are not bought or sold until the next manager is selected.      If the sporting directors or ownership at Stamford Bridge had any sense, they would listen to the five-time EPL winner. They need to figure out the new manager's tactics and formation so they can collaborate on acquiring players who will fit their style of play.
